Row Jones - Warped Magazine Interview

Warped Magazine took some time out of their busy schedule to interview Row Jones on what's going on in Row Jones world. They were just so curious to know what this buzz for the self proclaimed, "Smokey Robinson" of hip hop was all about. This, "Snoop Dogg of the East," has been hitting the east coast and releasing singles for his fans continuously for the past 2.5 years, so it's about time some one caught up to him. Check out the in-depth interview here. Link below after the excerpt.

Excerpt:

Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.

The song is called Don’t Talk and it’s produced by Bboyspaz, a producer out of North Carolina. It’s a hip hop/R&B mixture with all the vocals done by me. This song has been out for a few months already and it’s getting a great response locally; now it’s time to spread it throughout the country and worldwide. It’s all original music, no samples or anything.

The concept of the song is basically based on the idea that body language is the most prevalent thing when it comes to communication in relationships. Whether it’s your friend, family, or significant other. But of course, I’m talking strictly about a woman I’m dealing with.

There’s just something about being able to know what someone is thinking or saying without them even talking. We all kind of speak sign language on the low. The song is on Reverbnation, Facebook, and Bandcamp. And will be on MySpace and YouTube very soon.

How does your music separate yourself from other artists and bands out there?

My music is based on real situations. There’s no need to exaggerate. Even when I’m talking about being in the club, I come from a different perspective. I have a song about only needing the women in the club until the end of the night, after the dancing is done I’m not sticking around fishing for numbers/fights/flyers etc. If I do end up bringing one home, she better like taking cabs (haha).

There has definitely been a rebirth in the definition of “real rap.” In my experience it started with people like Mos Def, The Roots, and Little Brother. Mos Def is a superstar, yet Ms. Fat Booty is about a chick who paid him no mind in the club until she met him again later through industry connects.

Little Brother is the epitome of reality rap, talking about jobs they had in the department store and women who only wanted to mess with them because they thought a record deal was on the table. That’s the kind of vibe I bring to the table.

Reggae Sundays - A Lesson In Vibes

Simple. This is a lesson in vibes. Smooth transitions, classics and hits. New music mixed with old traditions. Just listen....you might learn somethin. I wanna shout out Apani Smith for listening! That was a blessing. It's nice to have people who already have fame in their own right, listening to you. It's amazing what this internet thing can do and how it can connect people from all walks of life so easily.

On a more solemn note...my heart goes out to those who were brutally and horribly killed in their school in Connecticut. I can't believe people could be so heartless and senseless. I played a song for them, Jah Cure - Thank You For Life. I have to make sure I appreciate MY life, cause i bet they would want people to put more value on life in general.

Bless Up

Take a listen

Video: The Softer Side of Row Jones

Sometimes you have to just slow down and take things one cat a time, (get your mind out the gutter). With my busy schedule, it's always nice to take a little time and enjoy the finer things in life. So I decided to go to a friends house and chill. Low and behold, he had recently purchased a kitten for his oldest daughter, who just turned 2. That kitten was so new, it didn't even understand what the hell was going on when i picked it up. It thought it was gonna drop to the ground and go splat. Luckily I calmed him down some. He was a cute little one, so i took some video.

Yea that's right....I rap...and I just wrote a little story about a kitten. I should write a song about it next. With a thug mentality.

New Track - Row Jones ft. Ra Spitta "I Feel Nothin'

You lived there all your life it seems. Growing up, flying off your first bike like superman(for 2 seconds). Saw your first illegal picture, firecracker or weapon there. There's nothing like that hometown love, that makes you FEEL loved. Because to be loved is to be whole. And we all want a whole lot of love, but have none to give anymore. Even though your family is there. It's an endless cycle...until it breaks.

And your still standing.

Unbroken and whole. Unspoken with goals. Nah..that's too deep.

Unravel the folds...

It's people with THAT mentality, who make it out (commercially) of there city
and create a real name for their brand. And when you move somewhere else and build a foundation. It can be hard to feel your city the same way. I still believe in it. The Roots on Jimmy Fallon. Meek Mills helped keep us on the map in the new wave of hip hop. Somebody always does. Check the track record. There's always gonna be physical changes sure, but those physical changes shape the way things operate and feel. Sometimes it's for the better, sometimes not. And I say all this to say, sometimes............I feel nothin. But no matter what. I still got love for my city. PHL - Phila - iLladel half life ALL DAY... Beantown stand UP.

Ranting,

Row Jones

Reggae/Soul Sundays - Soulfire

As usual, in case you missed this Sundays show, it's here for your listening pleasure. Try not to make a mess where you sit. If you do, text TV to 62297 and Macy's will send you a 20% off coupon. Use that coupon to buy some new underwear. Maybe a 3-pack. But this is a nasty topic, moving on...

This Sunday, we added Soul as I began doing every 3rd Sunday. It's been a very fun time. For some it's a confusing time, i know. Your like wait....Marvin Gaye AND Buju Banton? How does that work? But isn't it all soul music in the end? just from different cultures, but we are all the same people. Both artists use bands, both artists sing love songs and songs of oppression over smooth bass lines and smooth melodies. To me...it's all the same and it all deserves to be played on a Sunday. Check it out below.

We had a crazy storm out here a couple days ok, Hurricane Sandy. Sandy tried to tear down everything that was built on the Northeast Corridor. But we survived! You have to appreciate having a roof over your head. I really feel sorry for people who had to live outside. There has to be more we can do for the homeless. Even the ones who don't want to help themselves. Everybody needs shelter. But I digress. This mix done weathered the storm! Just wait until next week.

Reggae Sundays - Bring Back The Soul

Integrating Soul & R&B into an already soulful reggae afternoon. Check out this edition for a different spin on what can be blended together. To me, it only makes sense to mix together to soulful genres of music like this. And hey, it's all black music anyway. Why not blend it?

A lot of people don't even realize that many of their favorite reggae songs are covers of old school R&B and Soul songs. There's a lot of newer covers (90's and up) but the old ones always get looked over. There's also plenty of rock/alternative/pop covers as well. Even Lady Saw covered a Jimmy Buffet song, "Pina Colada's". Oh yea, you know it.

Listen below...Every 3rd Sunday 2-4pm we add soul music....

ENJOY!

Reggae Sundays: Everybody Must Work

This week was a little crazy. After a rough start, and an even tougher restart...The music was rolling. We started off with some smooth roots reggae to soothe the soul, before I paid homage to Barrington Levy with some select tracks. He is a legend in Reggae & Dancehall and fortunately he's coming up here to Boston on Oct. 20th. I can't wait. Sit back and enjoy this episode of reggae sundays because it DEFINITELY gets turned up by the end with uber amounts of dancehall. That's right...uber. I can use that word! Take a listen! Next week is Reggae/SOUL Sundays...mixing in Soul & R&B music. What could be more perfect on a Sunday afternoon?

**New Video** "Hey J, Yo Row"

New video from J Magas and Row Jones! "Hey J, Row Jones. This video is a Dance/Trance/Hip Hop experience! I don't think you have seen a video like this before. We definitely put some good thought into the structure of this song. It's basically a party song to show how people react when we come around, whether it be the club or on stage, they HAVE to scream our names! You will be saying the same names once your done hearing this song. We got dancing girls in the shadows, planetary backgrounds and fire coming from the hands. This video has it all! I hope y'all enjoy it. Of course there's also an mp3 which I will put right after the vid. Enjoy people! Please "Like it" if you like it and share it all over facebook and twitter! Oh yea...you can ... ahem... BUY the track too. Support is much appreciated. I want to be able to keep giving you good music!

Healthy Vaginas

OK, so don't judge me but , I found this article on facebook and thought it was really interesting. I'm always interested to know more about women and what makes them tick. So when i came across this interesting tidbit, naturally I was engrossed in reading it from start to finish. I don't care if this weirds you out. I'm sure even some women don't know this much about themselves because they live it every day and may just take it for granted. But its some cool stuff.  Check out HEALTHY VAGINAS. No really....

Healthy Vaginas

Listen to Reason! A healthy vagina is as clean and pure as a carton of yoghurt...

Now there's a statement to combat some of the negative messages we have received about our nether regions. We are often taught that our vaginas are dirty and germ filled - generally not a nice place to go. But in fact as Dr Hillier from the Magee-Womans hospital in Pittsburgh states a "healthy vagina is as clean and pure as a carton of yoghurt". from Woman An Intimate Geography by Natalie Angier.

A healthy vagina is a self regulating system and is cleaner than our mouths and much much cleaner than our rectums. The vaginal ecosystem is a mutually advantageous relationship between the vagina itself and the micro-organisms that inhabit it. Your vagina is full of life in the form of bacteria but these are good bacteria fighting the good battle to keep bad bacteria out of your reproductive system. These good bacteria are called lactobacilli which are the same organisms found in yoghurt. In a healthy vagina these lactobacilli maintain a acidic environment - around 3.8 - 4.5 pH ( a little bit more acidic than black coffee which has a pH of 5).

Vaginal mucus is "made up of the same things found in blood serum, the clear, thin, sticky liquid that remains behind when the solid components of blood, like clotting factors, are separated away. Vaginal discharge consists of water, albumin - the most abundant protein in the body - a few stray white blood cells, and mucin, the oily substance that gives the vagina and cervix their slippery sheen. Discharge is not dirt, certainly, and it is not a toxic waste product of the body in the sense of urine and faeces. No, no, no,. It is the same substance as what is inside the vagina, neither better nor worse, pulled down because we're bipedal and gravity exists, and because on occasion the cup runneth over."page 53 - 4 Woman, an intimate Geography by Natalie Angier

What about smell?? We have all heard the jokes that compare our private parts to fish. A healthy vagina has a slightly sweet pungent odour. If it smells anymore pungent than this or takes on a fishy odour then this is usually a sign that the delicate balance has been upset and the Lactobacilli (good bacteria) are losing the battle.

There are numerous things that can upset the balance in the vagina and lead to the smelly condition called bacterial vaginosis.
•Poor hygiene - if you haven't bathed for a week - things will start getting aromatic. It is not necessary to scrub or use heavily perfumed soaps or sprays on your genital area. Clean water is best, as lots of perfumed products used here can cause thrush.
•Illness - Pelvic Infections can lead to vaginosis. Candida is a condition where the vagina becomes too alkaline (due to diet, oral contraceptives, stress) causing some of the not so good bacteria to flourish.

Pregnancy and the resultant change in your hormone levels can cause thrush.
•Drugs like Oral contraceptives and antibiotics can contribute to vaginosis.
•Low levels of lactobacilli - some women have less robust lactobacilli leaving them open to infections.
•Douching is really bad for the vagina. It kills off the lactobacilli leaving your vagina open to attack from the bad guys.
•Sperm are highly alkaline, so when they arrive in the vagina, the vagina needs to work extra hard to return itself to its acidic status quo, this can cause a brief increase in odour. If a woman has many sexual partners and does not use condoms, that is, is subjected to may different kinds of sperm, she may be more prone to vaginosis as her body tries to adjust.

The basics of maintaining a healthy Vagina
•Do not douche. The only exception to this rule which may be acceptable is if you are trying to conceive and are trying to alter your vaginas pH for a greater good. Do it as little as you can and increase the number of lactobacilli in your diet through upping your intake of yoghurt or taking acidophilus tablets
•Use condoms if you have multiple partners - which you should be using anyway to avoid STD's.
•Eat a good healthy diet, minimising sugar intake (sugar helps the bad guys grow). Include good yoghurt or acidophilus every day.
•Wear cotton underwear - this stops things getting too steamy down there, allowing good air flow.
•Do not use perfumes/spray on the genital area. Let it be remembered well!

OH YEA!

Still got a lot to learn, but hey, I'm sure i'm better than SOMEbody. I figured I might as well share the mix with ya'll. Hope you like what you hear!

ReggaeSundays Live Podcast! 2-4pm EST

I recently started a podcast at http://mixlr.com/rowjones called Reggae Sundays. It will be mostly roots reggae, 90's and some new stuff sprinkled in. Most likely I will switch it up to some old school dancehall at the end of the show just to have a change of pace. but just lock in to find out.

The site I'm playing from is easy enough to use because you can just sign in with your Facebook account. So no need to actually register! The show will definitely be live every week as I travel through time in reggae music. For you Bob Marley lovers, yes there will be some of that, but i try not to play too much of his music because there is much to reggae then him. He was just the catalyst for the platform

You can always come back to this blog to listen to the live stream as well! It will play automatically at 1pm every Sunday. I also will play randomly during the week, usually by 8pm. Just to fool around. There are already some podcasts posted up on http://mixlr.com/rowjones, So listen to what was played previously as well. Enjoy!!
